AGENDAS: Zoning Board ||| Adjustment Board
Primghar has zoning restrictions so before you build or make changes to your property please check with the City Clerk. The approval process, while not cumbersome, does take time so be sure to put zoning approval early in your planning. The process--you file a building permit, the zoning officer reviews the permit, and finally the city council approves (?) the permit. Then you may make the changes (remember to stay within your plan).
The zoning regulations are being updated to more closely apply to a rural, small town. The quality of life here expects regard for neighbors and for the future in setting standards at all. Where you might not consider your project as worthy of concern, broader environmental effects, long term ramifications, and county, state, and federal law may affect you/us.
You can read the zoning regulations as they currently are written at the City Offices. The online version may not be current but could be a starting place for study. When the new version is complete, it should be uploaded to the internet.
The Board of Adjustment is available if you dispute the limitations of zoning. An example: Zoning requires setbacks from the street but for some reason you need a wider garage door (health??). Zoning says no; the doctor says yes--take it to the Board of Adjustment.
