Grass might best be mowed so the clippings are mulched into the yard. This saves gasoline (working to fight global warming), feeds the lawn, etc. For Pete's sake--don't mow so clippings go into the street. More on that later.
Please don't rake leaves into the street. The storm sewer gets plugged, downstream habitat is damaged, and finally, the Gulf (a thousand miles away) is damaged. The City provides a dumpster for grass in the summer and for leaves in the fall. It is behind the power plant (1st St SW and McCormack Ave).
Storm water and sewer water are handled using two separate systems. Sewage goes to the lagoon system SE of town. Storm water discharges into streams--one east and one west of town. Some older rain gutters and some perimeter foundation drains empty into the sewer system. These need to be changed to drain responsibly. If you are buying an older house, make sure you question the seller.
Some towns place stickers above each storm drain reminding us to keep storm drains for water (only). (See grass and leaves paragraphs for plea-s of care.)
From Nov. 1st to Mar. 30th there is no on-street parking from 2 AM to 6 AM. This is to allow snow plows to clean the streets safely. Sidewalks should be cleared (within 24 hours). Cars have been ticketed for parking overnight; the city has billed homeowners who did not clear their sidewalks.
Fri: residential garbage pickup; 1st & 3rd Wed: recycle-ables pickup.
